    Trauma

Did your child experience a distressing or traumatic event and has not been the same since?

Is your child frequently on edge, irritable, and ready to snap?

    Is your child easily startled?

Does your child have difficulties sleeping?

Does your child experience poor concentration or confusion, or appears easily overwhelmed?

Does your child experience nightmares or repetitive images of a traumatic event?

Does your child experience flashbacks of a traumatic event?

Does your child engage in avoidance behaviors to prevent reminders of the traumatic event that he or she experienced?

Trauma can have short and long-term consequences in children’s ability to function.  There is a broad range of reactions that trauma experiences can bring, including trust difficulties, hypervigilance, panic, intrusive, thoughts, anger, sadness, and loss of interest in activities.

While the signs and symptoms associated with traumatic experiences can feel complex and, at times, overwhelming, it is possible to improve the quality of life following distressing events. Trauma symptoms impact not just the child but caregivers and others who care about the child.  Symptoms may also be experienced by others who have witnessed or heard about the trauma. Trauma-focused therapies combine compassion with evidence-based therapeutic methods to help children and families overcome trauma-related symptoms. At the Good Life Center for Mental Health, we provide a safe and supportive environment to help children and families move beyond the trauma and return to a joyful and symptom free life.

So if these sound like your child

    • He or she appears anxious, irritable and depressed after experiencing a traumatic event
    • He or she appears to be re-experiencing disturbing memories, flashbacks and physical symptoms like sweating, palpitations, panic attacks and fear
    • He or she seems hyper-vigilant or easily startled or frightened

…Then trauma-focused treatment at the Good Life Center for Mental Health may be of help.
